This year, I’ve set me and my boys a challenge. We will be walking 100 BRAND NEW walks within a year. As they are completed, I will be adding a blog to show you the walk should you wish to take your own dogs for the adventure!
The challenge started on the 18th May 2019, with a 6 mile walk around Compton, Berkshire, about 20 minutes out of Newbury. The walk took us about 2 hours. It’s not very steep, and there are no stiles along the way. There are a few sheep in adjacent fields but none you have to walk through. The majority of the route is along bridleways so take care if you have a dog that isn’t a fan of horses (ahem, Aslan!).
This walk starts in the middle of Compton. Park on Horn Street and walk towards Wallingford Road. Turn right onto the road, and when you reach an old railway bridge, turn right onto the bridleway. After about 20 minutes of walking, bear right. At the next junction take the left track and continue until you reach a crossroads. You will need to cross the ridgeway and head through the bushes to join the further track, heading left.
Carry on until you reach the next track on the left, and turn left here. Continue until you rejoin the ridgeway. Continue and walk over a disused railway line, then turn left and follow the bridleway until you see another bridleway sign to the right that crosses the corner of a field. Continue ahead on this track until you reach the road again which will lead you back into Compton!
If you like, you can use the iFootpath app to help you navigate the route. The route on there is called ‘Compton and Ridgeway Circular’.
